Community Efforts

California Community College Coaching & Climate Change (STEM Realities) Oct 2020 – Present

  • Develop community college programing for Chicanos, Latinos, and Indigenous communities with Dr. Yvonne Rodriguez.
  • Students: receive coaching, conversations in safe communities, & gain access to scientists conducting research in their field of interest.
  • Students work on Climate Change projects affecting their communities & paired with scientists to perform research.
  • Develop relationships between Community Colleges with the California University’s STEM Program Managers to help transfer students adjust and succeed in their undergraduate career, in addition to getting them engaged in research.
  • Two Events for CCCs:

Teacher – Environmental Science & Climate Change June 2013 – June 2014
University of California, Santa Cruz & Natural Bridges High School, Santa Cruz, CA

  • Developed
    • pedagogy methods for at-promise youth to complete High School with hands-on STEAM curriculums
    • an environmental science curriculum for students to transform classrooms into environmentally friendly spaces (more natural light in their classrooms and saving water in the farm).
    • Students learned: farming and programming devices to control irrigation by saving water with rainwater tanks, power usage & effects of synthetic light to the human body, drawing classroom schematics and increasing natural light by measuring and cutting material to install light tubes in their classroom, and environmental justice.

Southwestern College (SWC), Chula Vista, CA

  • Worked with MEChA member to establish community information meetings regarding environmental racism.

Government Efforts

HHS Environmental Justice (EJ) Working Group (WG) Member Jan 2023 – March 2024
U.S. Food and Drug Administration

  • Collaborate with
    • HHS Agencies on Environmental Justice, specifically FDA EJ efforts.
    • FDA EJWG members to address EJ in terms of medical devices, plus the other Centers for Drugs, Biologics, & Tobacco
    • the Focused Ultrasound Foundation to collect data from Firms on their EJ efforts
    • FDA EJWG members to make FDA-wide and the public aware of Environmental Assessments (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impacts (FONSI) documentation from Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and Center for Tobacco Products (CTP)
